AdBlocker Deluxe

Tired of online ads flashing while you try to read the online newspaper or view your favourite online comic? "AdBlocker Deluxe" is a small file called hosts that is used by Windows to block unwanted servers.

Windows howto:

1 - Download THIS file (AdBlocker.zip)
2 - Open the folder C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\
3 - Locate the file hosts and rename it to hosts-o (for backup)
4 - Extract AdBlocker.zip to find the file hosts
5 - Copy the extracted hosts and place in the C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\ folder

Linux howto:

1 - Download THIS file (AdBlocker.zip)
2 - Extract AdBlocker.zip to find the file hosts and open it in your favourite text-editor.
3 - Locate the file named hosts in /etc/ and open that too in your favourite text-editor
4 - Copy the block of lines between # Start of manual entries and # End of manual entries from the AdBlocker.zip/hosts to /etc/hosts
NOTICE - Make sure that the file is saved.

Mac OS X howto:

1 - Download THIS file (AdBlocker.zip)
2 - Extract AdBlocker.zip to find the file hosts and open it in your favourite text-editor.
3 - Locate the file named hosts in /private/etc/ and open that too in your favourite text-editor (notice that you will need root priveleges to save changes).
4 - Copy the block of lines between # Start of manual entries and # End of manual entries from the AdBlocker.zip/hosts to private/etc/hosts

Confirmed to work on: Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Linux (Ubuntu)

Note: this will NOT make your computer crash, but it may block your internet. If that happens, follow the Uninstall instructions below.

Uninstall Instructions

Windows: delete the file hosts and reverse step 3.
Linux & Mac OS: reverse step 4.

Some computers will need to restart for the changes to take effect
If you still see ads on the internet after this, please notify me with adress to the site and I will add it to the blocker.
